Study Finds Toy-Related Injuries on the Rise in U.S.

A recent study found that the annual rate of injury connected to use of a toy by children in the United States increased by almost 40% over the past two decades.

Parents, friends and loved ones purchase toys for children in an attempt to share some joy. Unfortunately, more and more of these toys are leading to memories of Emergency Department visits throughout the country. A recent study reports that the rate of emergency room visits connected to injuries from toys is on the rise, and that ride-on toys are of particular concern.

More on the study

The study, Toy-Related Injuries Among Children Treated in US Emergency Departments, 1990 – 2011, was conducted by researchers from prestigious institutions throughout the country, including The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Tulane University School of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Child Injury Prevention Alliance. Researchers reviewed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System between 1990 and 2011. Researchers used this data to determine that the annual rate of injury suffered by children in the United States increased by 39.9% from 1990 to 2011.

Other interesting findings include:

  • Number and rate of injuries peaked when children were two years old.
  • 63.4% of the patients treated for injuries were male.
  • Researchers noted that ride-on toys were of particular concern.

More specifically, ride-on toys accounted for 34.9% of all injuries. The next most common toy type responsible for injuries was recreational equipment with only 9.9%.Researchers also note that 77.6% of the ride-on injuries were related to falls and that these toys accounted for 59.6% of all injuries reported due to falls.

More on what to do if injured by a toy

Those who are injured by a toy may be eligible for compensation to help cover the cost of medical expenses and rehabilitation needs. The type of case that will be used to receive this compensation varies depending on the details of the case. In some instances, a product liability case may be pursued. This type of case is used when a product is found dangerous or defective. It allows the victim to hold the manufacturer or seller responsible for the injuries caused by the product.

Establishing a claim can be a complex process. Even determining the responsible parties is difficult – the manufacturer of the entire toy, manufacturer of component parts, wholesaler, assembler or retail store could all play a role. As a result, those who are injured are wise to seek the counsel of an experienced defective household products lawyer to better ensure a more favorable outcome.
