Bus accident kills 1, injures dozens on Interstate 15

A tragic tour bus accident on Dec. 19 claimed the life of a 64-year-old woman, who died when she was partially ejected from the vehicle. The woman, who was not identified until days after the incident, was the only person to perish in the incident, although most of the 22 passengers aboard the bus also suffered some form of injury. Six of those individuals were seriously wounded in the bus accident. The tour bus was on its way to Valley View Casino when it slid on the slick highway in northern San Diego County.

Official reports show that two similar crashes occurred on the same freeway on the same day, with this particular bus accident occurring at about 2:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15. Official reports show that the driver in the incident was traveling at about 55 mph when the bus began to fishtail on the wet pavement. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, and the bus was flipped over onto its side. Authorities do not believe that intoxication played a role in the collision, though speed may have contributed to the wreck.

The company involved in this wreck, Five Star Bus Charter, only operates two buses and employs two drivers in the area. Interestingly, those buses were also involved in two other crashes within the past two years. One of those crashes resulted in passenger injury, according to news reports. Despite those deficiencies, the bus charter company had been given a satisfactory safety rating from federal investigators. Despite the positive safety record, the bus company’s registration was suspended at the beginning of the month because of failure to pay required fees and taxes.

When the California victims boarded the bus, they assumed that the bus driver would provide a safe, comfortable ride to their destination. Family members of the woman who died, along with those who have survived the incident, may benefit from financial damages that are provided through a personal injury lawsuit. Victims may be able to recover damages for pain and suffering, emotional distress and a variety of other civil claims related to the accident. Personal injury attorneys can help these victims learn more about their rights in the wake of the crash.
